US Justice Department Joins Lawsuit to Stop California's Congressional Map
The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
